On the Status of Clitic Reflexives and Reciprocals in Italian and Serbian

چکیده
This paper discusses the status of Italian and Serbian clitic reflexives and reciprocals with respect to the phenomenon of split intransitivity. Assuming an analyses that treats clitics as non-argumental markers of the verb’s derived intransitivity, numerous proposals have been put forward as to whether clitic reflexives and reciprocals are unaccusative or unergative. The issue still appears as problematic in the literature, due to the fact that compelling empirical evidence is available for both views. As a solution to this problem, we adopt the approach of Alsina (1996), according to whom both verbal arguments remain implicitly present in the clitic forms, making reflexives and reciprocals behave as unaccusative in some contexts, and as unergatives in others. In addition, we look at patterns of reflexive and reciprocal marking of intransitive verbs in Italian and Serbian, and we show that reflexives are more closely related to non-derived unaccusatives, while reciprocals have a closer relation to non-derived unergatives. This is formally captured in the framework of Correspondence Theory (Ackerman and Moore 2001), in an analysis indicating that in reflexive-marked forms there is a progressive loss of agentivity, while the reciprocal-marked forms are characterised by a gradual decrease in patienthood.

Reflexives and Reciprocals in Synchronous Tree Adjoining Grammar
An attractive feature of the formalism of synchronous tree adjoining grammar (STAG) is its potential to handle linguistic phenomena whose syntactic and semantic derivations seem to diverge. Recent work has aimed at adapting STAG to capture such cases. Anaphors, including both reflexives and reciprocals, have presented a particular challenge due to the locality constraints imposed by the STAG fo...
متن کاملThe Spanish pronominal clitic system
In this paper we present a model of the Spanish pronominal clitic system. We start with a review of the phenomenon, including simple and complex clitic climbing and the related phenomena of reflexives, and also the impersonal passive-reflexive and activeimpersonal forms. Then, we review the status of pronominal clitics and propose that it is a dual phenomenon: on the one hand, enclitics are inf...
متن کاملDynamics of Reflexivity and Reciprocity
Plural reflexives and reciprocals are anaphoric not only to antecedent pluralities but also to relations between the members of those pluralities. In this paper, I utilize Dynamic Plural Logic (van den Berg 1996) to analyze reflexives and reciprocals as anaphors that elaborate on relations introduced by the verb, which can be collective, cumulative, or distributive. This analysis generalizes to...
متن کاملBinding of Anaphors in LTAG
This paper presents an LTAG account for binding of reflexives and reciprocals in English. For these anaphors, a multi-component lexical entry is proposed, whose first component is a degenerate NP-tree that adjoins into the anaphor’s binder. This establishes the local structural relationship needed to ensure coreference and agreement. The analysis also allows a parallel treatment of reflexives a...
متن کاملSyntax-driven bindings of Spanish clitic pronoun
In this paper we present an analysis of the relationship between the Spanish clitic pronoun system and the Binding Theory. Spanish clitic pronouns have a dual behaviour; in the proclitic case, they behave like independent lexical units, hence proper clitic, but on the enclitic case they are hence morphological affixes (i.e. inflexions). In the first case, the clitics stand for pronouns, therefo...
